These cups are made with a sandy brown clay that fires to a rich black. They are coated in a glaze made with ash from native desert Piñon and Juniper trees, mixed with red clay gathered locally. It creates a complex set of browns and greens with drips and blotches throughout.

These two cups have the same glaze but opposite results. One has a matte green finish with small rivulets of glaze and iron spotting. The other one lost a lot of its color in the flame and ended up a dark spotted brown.
